Security Council Press Statements 2023

  • Security Council Press Statement on Yemen, 04/04/2023. This press statement welcomed the recent agreement between the Yemeni government and Houthis to release prisoners, condemned recent military escalations and called on donors to contribute the outstanding funding required for the emergency phase of the salvage operation of the Safer oil tanker.

Security Council Press Statements 2022

  • Security Council Press Statement on Yemen, 05/10/2022. The members of the Security Council expressed their deep disappointment at the passing of the 2 October deadline to extend the Yemen truce by six months.
  • Security Council Press Statement on Yemen, 12/09/2022. The members of the Security Council called on both parties to urgently intensify, and be flexible in, the negotiations under the auspices of the United Nations to agree on an expanded truce that could be translated into a durable ceasefire. 
  • Security Council Press Statement on Yemen on 04/08/2022. The members of the Security Council welcomed the 2 August renewal of the truce in Yemen.
  • Security Council Press Statement on Yemen on 03/06/2022. The members of the Security Council welcomed the 2 June extension of the truce in Yemen.
  • Security Council Press Statement on Yemen on 13/04/2022. The members of the Security Council highlighted the 7 April announcement of the peaceful transfer of powers of the legitimate Government of Yemen by President Abdrabbuh Mansur Hadi. They welcomed the creation of and assumption of responsibilities — in accordance with this transfer of powers — by the Presidential Leadership Council (PLC) of the Government of Yemen that reflects a broader array of political actors. 
  • Security Council Press Statement on Yemen on 04/04/2022. The members of the Security Council welcomed the 1 April call by UN Special Envoy [Hans] Grundberg for a two-month truce announcement on Yemen and the positive response from the parties. 
  • Security Council Press Statement on Yemen on 14/01/2022. The members of the Security Council condemned the Houthi seizure and detention of the UAE-flagged vessel, RWABEE, off the coast of Yemen on 2 January 2022. They demanded the immediate release of the vessel and its crew and underscored the necessity of ensuring the crew’s safety and well-being until their release.  They called on all sides to resolve the issue quickly and underlined the importance of freedom of navigation in the Gulf of Aden and Red Sea, in accordance with international law.

Security Council Press Statements 2021

  • Security Council Press Statement on Yemen on 18/11/2021. The members of the Security Council condemned in the strongest terms the very recent and ongoing seizure of and intrusion into the compound formerly used as the United States Embassy in Sana’a, Yemen, by the Houthis, during which dozens of local employees were detained. The members of the Security Council called for an immediate withdrawal of all Houthi elements from the premises. The members of the Security Council called for the immediate and safe release of those still under detention.
  • Security Council Press Statement on Yemen on 20/10/2021. This press statement expressed unwavering support for UN Special Envoy Grundberg and stressed the need for de-escalation by all, including an immediate end to the Houthi escalation in Marib.
  • Security Council Press Statement on Yemen on 16/04/2021. The members of the Security Council welcomed the announcement of Saudi Arabia on 22 March, supported by the Government of Yemen, to end the conflict in Yemen and reach a comprehensive political solution, which was in line with the UN Special Envoy’s proposal for a nationwide ceasefire, re-opening Sana’a International Airport, and allowing free movement of ships for fuel and other commodities into Hudaydah port in accordance with the Stockholm Agreement. They welcomed Oman’s mediation efforts between the key stakeholders and encouraged continued engagement in the region.
  • Security Council Press Statement on Yemen on 18/03/2021. The Members of the Security Council condemned the escalation in Marib, which places 1 million internally displaced persons at grave risk and threatens efforts to secure a political settlement when the international community is increasingly united to end the conflict. They condemned the cross-border attacks against Saudi Arabia and expressed concern about military developments elsewhere in Yemen. They stressed the need for de-escalation by all, including an immediate end to the Houthi escalation in Marib.  They condemned the use of child soldiers in Marib.

Security Council Press Statements 2020 

  • Security Council Press Statetement on Yemen on 16/10/2020, The members of the Security Council reiterated that only an inclusive political solution can end the conflict in Yemen and emphasised their steadfast support for UN Special Envoy Martin Griffiths. They urged the parties to urgently endorse the UN-facilitated Joint Declaration proposals without delay in order to achieve an inclusive and sustainable peace. They stressed the need for urgent agreement to the Joint Declaration to enable negotiation of a comprehensive transitional agreement to end the conflict where power is shared among diverse political and social components. They underlined the importance of an inclusive political process allowing for the full and effective participation of women and youth. They called for the swift resumption of talks between the parties, in full engagement with the mediation led by the UN Special Envoy.

  • Dian Triansyah Djani (Indonesia) on Yemen - Security Council Media Stakeout on 18/08/2020, On 18 August, UN Special Envoy Griffiths, General Guha, and Assistant Secretary General a.i. Ramesh Rajasingham, briefed the Security Council about their plans to make urgent progress towards the UN’s peace proposals and in tackling the international funding crisis, which is severely limiting the humanitarian response.
  • The Council emphasised their steadfast support for Griffiths and called on the parties to urgently endorse the UN’s proposals to achieve sustainable peace as set out in relevant United Nations resolutions, including resolution 2216 (2015), as well as by the Gulf Cooperation Council initiative and its implementation mechanism and the outcome of the National Dialogue Conference. They welcomed the announcement on 28 July of renewed implementation of the Riyadh Agreement, mediated by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, which will be a necessary step towards a sustainable peace and welcomed the efforts of Saudi Arabia in this regard.
  • Security Council Press Statment on Yemen on 29/06/2020, The members of the Security Council reiterated their endorsement of the Secretary-General’s call of 25 March for those fighting in Yemen to immediately cease hostilities and emphasized their steadfast support for Special Envoy Martin Griffiths and his efforts to reach agreement on a nationwide ceasefire, humanitarian and economic measures, and the resumption of an inclusive Yemeni-led and Yemeni-owned political process.
  • Security Council Press Statement on Yemen on 30/01/2020, The Members of the Security Council expressed their serious concern at the significant escalation of violence in Nehm and Al Jawf and its impact on civilians, thousands of whom had been displaced in recent days. 

Security Council Press Statements 2019  

  • Security Council Press Statement on Yemen on 6/11/2019, welcoming the signing of the Riyadh Agreement between the GoY and the STC on 5 November 2019.  The Members of the Security Council recognised that this agreement represents a positive and important step towards a comprehensive and inclusive political solution for Yemen, and reiterated their full support for the efforts of the Special Envoy for Yemen, Martin Griffiths, to work with the Yemeni parties to pave the way for the resumption of comprehensive and inclusive negotiations. 
  • Security Council Press Statement on Yemen on 10/06/2019, underlining the full support of the members of the Security Council for Special Envoy of the Secretary-General for Yemen,  Martin Griffiths, and calling on the parties to engage constructively and continuously with the Special Envoy.  The members commended the efforts of the Special Envoy to support the parties to implement the Stockholm Agreement and to promote a political solution in Yemen.  
  • Security Council Press Statement on Yemen on 22/02/2019 calling on the warring parties in Yemen to immediately implement a deal to pull their forces out of three key ports and a key grain depot.
