UNMOGIP
United Nations Military Observer Group in India and Pakistan

Our Mission

UNMOGIP helps prevent the escalation of tensions between India and Pakistan in Jammu and Kashmir.

Following the partition in August 1947, India and Pakistan emerged as independent states, leaving some territories in dispute – Jammu Kashmir being the most prominent.

Established in 1949, UNMOGIP supervises the ceasefire along the Line of Control separating the contested territory of Indian-Administered Kashmir and Pakistan-Administered Kashmir. Despite successive ceasefire agreements and bilateral commitments, tensions persist.

The conflict’s impact has been profound, marked by recurring cross-border hostilities and civilian casualties. Cycles of violence continue exacerbating tensions between the two nuclear-armed neighbours, raising concerns for regional and global security.

UNMOGIP remains central to maintaining stability and preventing the escalation of conflict. By monitoring and investigating ceasefire violations and reporting to the Security Council under Resolution 307/1971, UNMOGIP helps reduce the likelihood of escalation and fosters conditions for peace.
