The UN Special Envoy for Yemen concludes visit to Moscow
Amman, 10 October 2024 - The United Nations Special Envoy for Yemen Hans Grundberg met today in Moscow with Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation Sergey Vershinin.
Mr. Grundberg expressed his profound concern regarding the ripple effects that the regional escalation in the Middle East has on Yemen. He stressed that international collaboration and diplomatic efforts are the only way to reverse the current worrisome trajectory affecting Yemen, the Red Sea and the region.
He briefed on his contacts with the parties, regional interlocutors and the work his office is conducting on the political, security and economic front.
The two sides discussed ways to build on the commitments by the parties towards a roadmap for comprehensive peace in Yemen amidst the current escalatory environment.
He further emphasized the importance of maintaining the Security Council’s unity on Yemen and to continue efforts to collaborate towards de-escalation for the benefit of Yemen and the region.
Discussions also focused on the arbitrary detention of United Nations, NGO, and civil society organization staff members by Ansar Allah. Special Envoy Grundberg expressed his appreciation for the Russian Federation's support and briefed on the UN’s and his personal efforts for their immediate and unconditional release.
