Deputy Head of Mission for Yemen Calls on Yemeni Leaders to Create Positive Conditions for the Resumption of Peace Talks

Amman, 11 January 2018—The Deputy Head of Mission of the Office of the Special Envoy for Yemen (OSESGY), Muin Shreim, concluded a five-day visit to Sana’a, during which he held meetings on the resumption of the Yemeni peace process with senior political figures from the Ansar Allah Movement, the General People’s Congress and other political actors and civil society leaders.

Shreim was encouraged by the commitment and cooperation of his Yemeni interlocutors to the resumption of the peace process. He urged the parties to engage fully and in good faith with the Office of the Special Envoy to reach a Yemeni-led agreement to end the conflict. Shreim called for unhindered and continued engagement between Yemen’s political leaders and the Special Envoy, which is critical to advance the political process.

The Deputy Head of Mission also underscored that all parties must take concrete steps to build confidence between them. This includes ensuring the uninterrupted operation of Hodeidah Port, which is a critical artery for the shipment of humanitarian assistance and commercial goods, while refraining from actions that violate applicable UN Security Council resolutions.

At a time when the United Nations is intensifying its efforts to facilitate the resumption of the political process in Yemen, it calls upon all parties to avoid engaging in threatening and escalatory rhetoric. The Special Envoy encourages the parties to adopt and convey principles of reconciliation, partnership, peace, consensus, and good neighbourliness. This is necessary to help the Yemeni people, who have suffered for too long under this war, to achieve their aspirations for a secure, stable and dignified life.

The Special Envoy reaffirms his readiness and ongoing commitment to support the Yemeni people in their efforts to reach consensual and comprehensive solutions to the conflict on the basis of the GCC Initiative and its implementation mechanism, the outcomes of the National Dialogue Conference and the relevant UN Security Council Resolutions, in addition to the progress that was achieved during the Kuwait Talks and ensuing efforts.
