Closure of UNPOS

The United Nations Political Office for Somalia (UNPOS), established on 15 April 1995, supported the Federal Government’s peace and reconciliation efforts. Its mandate ended on 3 June 2013, with its responsibilities transferred to the United Nations Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNSOM).

HLC meets for the first time under its new format

On 23 October 2009, the High Level Committee (HLC) was officially re-launched in Nairobi under a new format bringing together the Transitional Federal Institutions and the international community. USG Pascoe together with the SRSG, chaired the meeting in the presence of the Prime Minister and some members of his cabinet, members of the international community, as well as UNPOS. Participants highlighted the challenges facing Somalia and the need to have a political framework for cooperation and harmonisation of action in order to achieve concrete results. They welcomed the re-launching of the HLC, established pursuant to Article 9 of the Djibouti Agreement, as the right step in that direction. A communiqué was issued at the end of the meeting.
