Closure of UNPOS

The United Nations Political Office for Somalia (UNPOS), established on 15 April 1995, supported the Federal Government’s peace and reconciliation efforts. Its mandate ended on 3 June 2013, with its responsibilities transferred to the United Nations Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNSOM).

SRSG Augustine Mahiga visits Villa Somalia

Mogadishu, 18 April 2012 – Today SRSG Augustine Mahiga went to Villa Somalia, the seat of the Somali Transitional Federal Government, and met with both President Sheik Sharif Sheik Ahmed and Prime Minister Abdiweli Mohamed Ali. They discussed a variety of issues of mutual concern including the upcoming meetings in Mogadishu, such as the gathering of the clan elders and traditional leaders a few weeks from now in preparation for the Constituent Assembly and the Constituent Assembly to adopt the new Somali Constitution which will be held at the end of May. Also discussed were key issues such as the ongoing impasse in the Somali Parliament, the security situation in the capital in the aftermath of the bombing of the National Theatre and the overall political situation. The SRSG used the opportunity of the meeting to urge all the parties to resolve their differences in this critical period in the run up to the end of the transition.
