Closure of UNPOS

The United Nations Political Office for Somalia (UNPOS), established on 15 April 1995, supported the Federal Government’s peace and reconciliation efforts. Its mandate ended on 3 June 2013, with its responsibilities transferred to the United Nations Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNSOM).

UN Secretary-General convenes a High-Level Meeting on Somalia

New York, 23 September 2011 – The Secretary-General of the United Nations, Mr. Ban Ki-moon, convened a high-level meeting today on Somalia. Participants included representatives of: Burundi, Denmark, Djibouti, Ethiopia, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Kenya, Norway, the Russian Federation, Saudi Arabia, Somalia, Spain, Sudan, Sweden, Turkey, the United Kingdom, the United States, Uganda, the African Union, the European Union, the League of Arab States, and the Organisation of the Islamic Conference. His Excellency Abdiweli Mohamed Ali, Prime Minister of the Transitional Federal Government of Somalia (TFG) and His Excellency Dr. Jean Ping, the Chairperson of the African Union Commission gave an update on recent political and security developments in Somalia, as well as the humanitarian situation.
