Press Statement on the 24th Anniversary of the Women, Peace, and Security (WPS) Agenda

Amman, 24 October 2024 - On the 24th anniversary of the landmark UN Security Council Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace, and Security (WPS), the Office of the Special Envoy of the Secretary-General for Yemen (OSESGY) reaffirms its unwavering commitment to advancing women’s meaningful participation and gender inclusion in the Yemeni peace process.

Yemeni women have consistently shown resilience, playing active roles in peace, security, and governance, despite being historically excluded from formal political processes and negotiations. Their contributions, and peacebuilding efforts have been invaluable in fostering stability across the country amidst ongoing conflict.

"Yemeni women have a fundamental right to shape the future of their country and communities. On this anniversary of Resolution 1325, I urge all parties to empower women to actively participate in shaping the decisions that will lead to sustainable peace in Yemen," said Hans Grundberg, UN Special Envoy for Yemen. “My office will remain steadfast in its efforts to promote gender inclusion in line with Yemeni women aspirations and UN standards and commitments.”

Women’s meaningful participation has proven to improve the quality and sustainability of peace processes. Over the course of last year, OSESGY, in collaboration with UN Women, has engaged over 400 Yemeni women and men through building a bottom-up vision for an inclusive peace process in Yemen, centering women’s priorities and laying the groundwork for a more inclusive peace process.

OSESGY reaffirms its commitment to deepening collaboration with Yemeni women’s groups and civil society across all tracks of the UN-facilitated talks to amplify their voices, enhance their participation in decision-making, and ensure their priorities are central to the ongoing negotiations.
