Integrating a Women, Peace and Security Lens into the sphere of Aritficial Intelligence: strengthening Yemeni women’s capacity to address online violence

It is the month of #IWD2025. This month and every month, we are privileged to work and engage with remarkable Yemeni women. We will be highlighting some of our efforts throughout March #WomenPeaceSecurity.

Yemeni women activists and human rights defenders face mounting safety and security threats in their daily work, challenges that extend into their digital presence. In recent years, escalating online violence and cyber harassment have undermined women’s rights to privacy, safety, and freedom of expression, hindering their ability for effective advocacy. OSESGY, in partnership with the French Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs and the UN System Staff College, co-organized a workshop on the sidelines of the AI Action Summit in Paris from 10 to 13 February.

This initiative brought together a diverse group of Yemeni women and men from Aden, Hadramout, Hudaydah, Taiz, and Sana’a to discuss and address those issues with prominent global experts and equip them with critical knowledge and tools to strengthen women’s security and active engagement in the digital sphere. Participants shared insights on fostering an inclusive peace process in Yemen and explored practical strategies to counter online violence, amplify women’s voices, and build platforms that bolster peacebuilding efforts nationwide.

In addition, the Office of the Special Envoy co-organized with the French Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs and the UN System Staff College a panel on navigating the Women, Peace, and Security agenda in Yemen through ethical use of AI, opened by the Ambassador at Large of Gender Equality and Feminist Policies Delphine O. OSESGY also participated in the high-level event led by the French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot focusing on women’s rights online and multilateral coordination to combat online gender-based violence.
