On 10 September, the Council had a briefing in consultations with the Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for Yemen Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed on his mediation efforts in Oman and Riyadh and recent agreements from the sides to enter direct talks. The following day, Council members issued a press statement welcoming the Special Envoy’s announcement of the upcoming talks to be held in the region ahead of the Eid. These talks never materialised, when, two days later, the Yemen government said it would not participate.
