UN Special Envoy for Yemen concludes meetings in Riyadh

Amman, 14 January 2025 - The UN Special Envoy for Yemen Hans Grundberg concluded a visit to Riyadh, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, where he met with Yemen’s Prime Minister Ahmed Bin Mubarak and Foreign Minister Shayea Al-Zindani, as well as with senior Saudi officials and the diplomatic community.

Discussions focused on the developments in Yemen and the region and its impact on the Yemeni peace process. The Envoy briefed on his latest engagements and the need for immediate de-escalation and focus on constructive dialogue to pave the way for a Yemeni-owned political process. Mr. Grundberg stressed that the roadmap remains a viable path towards a nationwide ceasefire, addressing critical economic and humanitarian measures and initiating a political process. The discussions also centered on the economic challenges and the need for collaboration among the parties to take steps toward stabilizing the economy and easing the hardships of Yemeni people.

“We must grasp every opportunity there is to provide for a peaceful and stable future for Yemenis. The status quo is not sustainable and all actors must move away from a war-centered mindset to a peace-centered one”, said Mr. Grundberg. 

In a meeting with the ambassadors of the permanent members of the UN Security Council (P5), the Envoy thanked the P5 for their continuious support of his efforts and stressed that the unity of the Council is paramount to achieve a way forward for a peaceful and comprehensive resolution of the conflict.
